Chakra means "Wheel" in Sanskrit.
I am by no means a chakra expert. I have read about cleansing, balancing and maintaining the chakras in books and on the Internet, and while each author and expert has their own way of explaining them, the basic premise is the same. In order to balance and cleanse the chakras, one must meditate and concentrate. I would like to give you the basic and straightforward way to cleanse your chakras.
1. Sit on the floor with your back straight. Close your eyes and empty your mind of worry, stress, or random thoughts. Imagine yourself in a quiet, serene setting of your choice. It could be within the gates of a heavenly garden full of fragrant flowers. It could along the seashore. It could be in the middle of a tranquil field of corn. It is your decision.
2. Concentrate on the chakra you would like to cleanse.
3. Imagine the chakra as a spinning ball of light. Telepathically communicate with the chakra. Infuse the chakra with white, gold or colored light. Imagine energy is flowing easily in and out of the chakra. Imagine a small honeycombed filter is connected to a cup at the back of the chakra. Any negative energy passing through the honeycomb will become trapped in the little cup, like lumps of flour in gravy become clumped in a mesh while the nasty brown liquid eases past.
The Bodies within your body:
7. Ketheric: This body is your unbreakable tie to God.
6. Celestial: This body shows you the future.
5. Etheric: This body unites us with the universe.
4. Astral: This body links your essence to matter (i.e. your body to your spirit).
3. Mental: This body is the wellspring of your ideas, beliefs, outlooks, estimations, and intelligence.
2. Emotional: This body concerns creating, holding, and processing all emotions.
1. Physical: This body is the origin of all of your physical vibrations.

7th Chakra: The Crown
aka: The Thousand Petalled Lotus
Controls: The Pituitary Gland
Resides in: The Ketheric Body
Location: The top of the head.
If contaminated: May block access to messages or communication from the higher sphere or cause feelings of hopelessness.
Key: B
Color: Violet

6th Chakra: The Third Eye
aka: Agna or Brow Chakra
Controls: The Pineal Gland
Resides in: The Celestial Body
Location: In the center of the forehead.
If contaminated: May cause an inability to look outside oneself or the failure to connect with the other dimensions.
Key: A
Color: Indigo

5th Chakra: The Throat
Controls: The Thyroid Gland
Resides in: The Etheric Body
Location: In the throat.
If contaminated: May cause an inability to effectively communicate with others; a dull or sharp pain in the throat; or block creativity.
Key: G
Color: Blue

4th: The Heart Chakra
Controls: The Thymus Gland
Resides in: The Astral Body
Location: In the center of the chest.
If contaminated: May trigger heart or circulatory problems or ailments; may initiate damage to the immune system, lending to a heightened chance of catching colds or infectious diseases; and may cause emotional indifference, apathy, or ambivalence.

3rd: The Solar Plexus Chakra
Controls: The Adrenal Gland and the Spleen
Resides in: The Mental Body
Location: Below the sternum, in the solar plexus.
If contaminated: May cause uncontrollable feelings of being the victim or martyr, or may cause aggressive behavior, anger, rage, or resentment.
Key: E
Color: Yellow

2nd: The Spleen Chakra
Controls: Peyer's Patches and the Lymphatic System
Resides in: The Emotional Body
Location: Below the navel.
If contaminated: May cause inner emotional turmoil or guilt.
Key: D
Color: Orange

1st: Root or Basal Chakra
Controls: The Gonads
Resides in: The Physical Body
Location: At the base of the spine.
Key: C
Color: Red

Auric Bodies
There are three distinct bodies within one's own body: the Physical, Etheric, and Vital.
Physical:
Color of its bands: Bright white or light blue.
Location: Extends outward up to one-half inch from the surface of your skin.
Etheric:
Color of its bands: Gray or cloudy light blue.
Location: Extends outward up to four inches from the Physical Body. This body is an exact replica of the physical body, but not nearly as dense.
Vital:
Color of its bands: All colors.
Location: Extends outward up to six inches from the Etheric Body.
