I first read about Life Themes in Sylvia Browne's Book, Life on the Other Side (Dutton Books). Ms. Browne is an accomplished psychic and her gifts have been proven to be authentic. Many of her books have been on the New York Times Bestseller List and she is a regular guest on the Montel Williams Show (usually on Wednesdays). She has also appeared on other television shows such as Sally Jessy Raphael, Entertainment Tonight, Larry King Live and CNN. All of her books are fabulous…you will not be disappointed. Visit her website at www.sylviabrowne.com. She is a well-respected psychic, author, and speaker who uses her gifts to educate humanity about the soul's purpose on Earth.
The concept of Life Themes is actually very simple. We all have the choice to be reincarnated into another life. By choice I mean that while we are sentient beings living on the Other Side (one may call it Heaven), basking in God's light, we have a choice to be born on Earth in order to experience life for God (some souls are "life junkies" who sign up to live life after life on Earth and there are others who believe one life on Earth is more than enough). If we do not choose to incarnate, we may stay on the Other Side and work in a myriad of fields (science, research, animal husbandry, artistic pursuits, etc.) or, we could become a spirit guide to individuals who chose to incarnate on Earth. It is important to remember that spirit guides are not Angels…spirit guides are entities just like us who we appointed (before entering a life on Earth) to follow us around and help us out occasionally. Chances are, we all know exactly who our spirit guides are…we signed them up to help us before we were born!
But I digress. After we (as souls on the Other Side) decide to incarnate, we actually plot out our life's course in a chart. We choose what we will look like, what, if any, disabilities or shortcomings we will be born with, what we intend to accomplish, the people and situations that will cause us the most grief, and what advantages and obstacles we will have to work through to get this life thing right.
These advantages and obstacles are called Life Themes, which are broken down into a Primary Theme and a Secondary Theme. The Primary Theme is the inner drive that pushes you down the path of life. The Secondary Theme is the urge that tries to divert you from your true path. You are the only one who can determine what your Themes are. It may be difficult, but after enough soul-searching you may be able to recognize your Themes and work through them. You have 48 Themes to mix and match.
For instance, if someone has the Primary Theme of Hermit and the Secondary Theme of Activist, that person may have a few problems to deal with. The Hermit is content to be alone and can be without social interaction for long periods of time, but the Activist needs to be out in society, battling injustices and crying out for change. The Activist is rarely alone. A person with this chart must work vigilantly to find a happy balance that they can live with while simultaneously accomplishing what they promised God they would achieve.
I have studied the facts and compared it to the fiction and have come up with my own unique proposal of what the Life Themes mean. In addition to that, I believe there is a direct correlation between the Life Path and Destiny numbers (numerology), the Life Theme, and the astrological sign. The Life Theme is mired in religion and numerology and astrology are ancient pagan sciences that are rooted in mythology. These three concepts differ in meaning, structure, and origin, yet they somehow meld together to form a 3-D view of the soul's essence.
Below are descriptions of the different Life Themes. Some of the themes are similar, so it can be tricky to get it right. Take your time and study the Themes to find your soul's mission.
Achiever
Anyone who believes the old adage, "If you want something done, go ask a busy person" is probably referring to an Achiever. He will find solutions to problems that no one else has been able to solve. This "go-to" soul will see a project to through to the end and will give his all to achieve a goal. Diligent and conscientious, the Achiever spares no intellectual expense when attacking a project and is often held in great esteem. Regardless of his chosen career, these dynamos are instrumental in ensuring that the job at hand is completed. Problems may occur if the Achiever takes on too many projects at one time and becomes stressed out and overwhelmed with responsibilities.
Aggravator
Most human beings on this planet have run across one of these Life Theme types. He is a pest, an annoyance, a bickering gnat who rudely buts into private conversations, and an insufferable know-it-all. He complains constantly and is never satisfied. He blames others for his downfalls and is a walking hotbed of negativity. He is argumentative and pessimistic. He must learn tolerance, self-control, and should adopt a more positive outlook before he is completely ostracized from society. Of course, he has a purpose. Other Life Themes must learn to play off the Aggravator's perpetually nasty attitude in order to fully play out their own soul's mission in life.
Cerebral
The Cerebral Life Theme individual is typically the sort who buries himself in academia. His passion is knowledge and he is open to learning about anything; from exotic languages, to combustible engine repair, to ancient Mayan history, the Cerebral Life Theme's brain is a veritable sponge, soaking up information. He could also be a "professional student," researcher, professor, or simply an avid reader. His mind craves to absorb every tidbit of knowledge he can squeeze into his cranium and often, due to this drive to become a walking encyclopedia, he forgets to socialize or even interact with his fellow man. Left unchecked, he could possibly become a recluse who has no room in life for anything that can't be read, highlighted, or earmarked.
Champion
This individual is needs to win and hates to lose. On the favorable side of this theme, his optimism, resilience, tenacity, and desire to win will ensure that he does indeed achieve great fortune. When taken to the negative, the Champion will look for the golden ticket in every pipe dream. He feels that if he wins really big just once, his entire life will change to the better. When he fails, he has no problem getting back up, dusting himself off and trying again. Unfortunately, he does not learn from his blunders and in the end he is doomed to repeat the same mistakes over and over again. While his self-confidence is admirable, his inability to change his behavior can be maddening to his loved ones. The pressure and stress of not becoming the champion may leave him disillusioned and prone to pounce on every get rich quick scheme that appears on his radar. He is somewhat like the hungry man at a buffet. He will not take the steamed crab legs for $4.99 because he is convinced if he waits long enough someone will emerge from the kitchen with a plate of prime rib for $3.99. He wants to win so badly that he waits too long and gets no food at all.
Conscientiousness
He makes sure his family is provided for, that any chores around the house get done, and that he achieves his personal best in his chosen career. Accomplishing goals is a major driving force in this Life Theme. Not one to procrastinate, ignore pressing issues, or sit on his laurels doing nothing, he is only content when he is striving toward a goal. Problems arise when he foolishly overworks himself to the point that his health suffers. Stress should be kept to a minimum and he must at least try to relax once in while and allow others to share in the workload and enjoy the fulfillment of knowing they have done a good job.
Creator
This soul is motivated to create. Whether he is a sculptor, writer, painter, illustrator, singer, musician, dancer, or designer, he must express himself. His creativity bursts from his soul like a butterfly from a cocoon. He is driven by a burning wish to provide humanity with art, whether it is a neo-classical operetta or watercolor pop art. His creations are his children, born from his mind, heart, and soul. He unselfishly gives them to humanity as reminders that regardless of all of the hatred, chaos and sadness in the world there is still, and will forever be, beauty in life. Suppression of his artistic desires may cause him to feel depressed, physically ill or useless. In addition, with the gift of creativity comes a great emotional burden, especially if he finds immense fame. If not handled properly, the Creator may find that his gift is more than he is willing or able to handle.
Diplomat
Not to be confused with the Peacekeeper, the Diplomat Theme concerns the more radical, confrontational, or aggressive activist pushing for peace. He may employ drastic, illegal, or immoral methods to reach his end, making his character appear far more caustic and evil than that of his opponent(s). He may spout hateful rhetoric and call for violent anti-war protests to suppress an "evil" war-mongering establishment, apparently ignoring the fact that he has become exactly what he abhors. Some terrorists who blow up buildings and murder innocent human beings are of this Life Theme. Compromise or negotiations with the Diplomat are futile. At his best he is a blowhard who doesn't know when he has crossed the line but does not actually hurt other people. He is more interested in cramming his own agenda down people's throats and gaining personal fame than actually creating positive change. At his worst, the Diplomat is a misanthrope who is more interested in annihilating his perceived enemies than actually achieving peace.
Disciple
This Life Theme chooses to stand behind a leader and support the causes of others. The Disciple is not meek or subservient by any stretch of the imagination; he follows orders but has a strong voice, either in support or opposition. He can be the right hand man of an American President or highflying account executive taking orders from the CEO. He is the backbone of the community and it must be noted that he always has a choice between whom he chooses to follow; he can either follow a maniacal cult leader hell-bent on forcing suicide on misguided people, or follow the president of a humanitarian organization that delivers food to impoverished children in third world countries. The choice is his, and his alone.
Director
This Life Theme is what I refer to as a "duel" theme. On the one hand, the Director is the leader who coordinates, oversees, and allocates responsibility. He is invaluable in the workplace and in the home. He is often called upon for support, to answer questions, and give advice. With a gentle, yet firm hand, he can run a multi-million dollar company or a household of fifteen. He swells with pride at the success of his many apprentices of life and rarely does he feel envious of their accomplishments. On the other hand, a Director-Run-Amok may become disgruntled, selfish, out-of-control, maniacal, egotistical, and impossible to please.
The Discarded
This theme concentrates on rejection and the pain attached to it. Usually beginning in childhood and lasting until death, the individual living through this difficult theme is rejected by lovers, relatives, and social groups. She may wander through life, wondering why she is constantly abandoned and discarded like yesterday's garbage. She may also be an outcast or loner who, after a long string of failed relationships and careers, becomes despondent, depressed, or insecure. Working through this difficult and sometimes heartbreaking theme is painful, but in the end, if she grows closer to God and accepts a life of subconscious self-imposed rejection she will rise above her anguish and embrace the glory of her spirit instead of wallowing in the failure of the flesh.
Discipline
This Life Theme attempts to avoid temptations such as addictions to drugs or alcohol, sexual compulsions, money worship, and lustful infatuations. He recognizes the dangers in allowing risky influences to control the body and mind and avoids anything remotely resembling overindulgence. Unfortunately, his obsession with not becoming obsessed with a person, place, or thing can overwhelm him. By making it his life's mission to block out any chance of becoming susceptible to temptations of the flesh, he may inadvertently transmutate into a self-righteous, accusatory, finger-pointing snob who looks down at anyone who he deems an additive personality. This behavior does not win him any popularity prizes and may cost him friendships, but he thinks he is doing a great service. In a moment of weakness he may be enticed into temptation and become the creature he despises most. He must guard against losing his path and abandoning his moral beliefs.
Emotive
This overly sensitive Life Theme experiences every emotion in the spectrum, from extreme anger to debilitating sadness to tremendous elation. Sometimes moody and frequently unpredictable, the Emotive may seem as though she is in state of perpetual PMS, but the depth of her emotion is deep as a wishing well. She loves profoundly and hates intensely. She is a cauldron of seething passion that runs the emotional gamut between heavenly highs and hellish lows. She must find balance or she will spin out of control.
Entertainer
He may be the life of the party, workplace jester, or family comedian. The Entertainer does not necessarily have to be a big name professional actor or comedian, he just has to love the limelight and crave attention from others. He needs to be noticed and accepted and is truly happy when he is performing in front of an audience of receptive folks. Some successful salespersons are of this theme. He may be slightly egotistical or even have low self-esteem. Others must validate his worth, which can make him needy and greedy for attention.
Evaluator
Some souls were made to figure out enigmas. This individual has a burning desire to figure out what makes things tick. Whether he is researching black holes and their effect on the Milky Way Galaxy or taking apart the family toaster to understand why burnt bread crumbs fall where they do, the Evaluator has a burning desire to relentlessly solve puzzles. Highly intelligent and logical, he has a tendency to focus on one topic while ignoring the big picture. He digs for information while remaining true to the subject and is a person who will not quit until he is satisfied he has fully investigated the matter at hand. Of course, he must guard against becoming obsessed and single-minded.
Extrasensory
For centuries, major segments of society have branded those with the gift of divination, clairvoyance, or intuition as witches, heretics, or mentally diseased. Individuals with psychic abilities have been harassed, executed, burned at the stake, and ostracized from society. Contrary to popular belief, most psychics are God loving people who want to use their gifts to help humanity. In recent decades, more and more psychics have been tapped to assist law enforcement in investigating unsolved criminal cases. Unfortunately, charlatans who bilk depressed, desperate, and brokenhearted people out of their life savings tarnish and sully the reputations of true psychics. A true psychic helps society and does no harm.
Fortitude
This may be one of the most difficult Life Themes to tackle. It requires patience and resolve not to "jump the gun" so to speak. He must wait for the right time to act. Not prone to being rash or reckless, this theme is enduring and long-suffering. Only the most highly advanced souls choose this Life Theme because, let's face it, being patient is not the easiest thing in the world to do. He waits and waits and fights his human impulses to react and act. He waits patiently for his kids to graduate from college and get a good job before buying his dream boat; he waits patiently for his daughter to dump her greasy boyfriend instead of pushing her headfirst into a convent; he waits patiently for his wife of twenty years to conceive a child once again; and he waits patiently for his boss to wake up and recognize how much he contributes to the company. Problems arise when he watches people around him getting quick returns on their efforts while life passes him by.
Frailty
This Life Theme concerns itself with the brave soul who has chosen to live life with mental, physical, or emotional disabilities. He must conquer innumerable obstacles and hardships while struggling to accomplish feats that come easily to other Life Themes. He must also deal with cruel and ignorant factions of society who deem him a misfit and incapable of achieving greatness. Of course, malicious souls as those do not know the likes of Helen Keller and Stephen Hawking.
Fretter
This Life Theme is certain nothing in life will ever go his way. Fear of the unknown possesses his every thought and the mere idea of being successful sounds more like a pipe dream than a bona fide possibility. He may be convinced a black cloud of failure will always be hanging over his head. Conspiracy theories are always up for discussion and he naturally believes everyone (and even fate) is out to get him. Worried, anxious, apprehensive, and suspicious over unfounded what-ifs, the Fretter is in a constant state of panic. When anything good does happen to him, he is not thrilled like regular folks. Instead, he is convinced he will somehow have to pay for any good fortune with bad karma. In this respect, unhappiness and adversity makes him happy.
Giver
This Life Theme is straightforward and obvious. This is the humanitarian of our society. He assists downtrodden, neglected, abused, homeless, discarded, hungry, and anguished people. He can be found knee deep in mud, handing out bags of meal and bottles of water to victims of natural disasters overseas. He can be seen in filthy third world health care clinics administering aid to victims of rape and torture. He can be found carrying fifty-pound bags of sand to protect homes from water damage caused by hurricanes. He can be located at the civic center teaching adults how to read. The Giver Theme reflects a person who is as giving of his time and money as he is of his heart and soul.
Helper
When human beings are physically, mentally, or emotionally ill, the unique individuals who bring comfort and aid may be Helpers. This Life Theme may include doctors, nurses, psychiatrists, candy stripers, ministers, welfare caseworkers, aid workers, and humanitarians. He is driven by a need to help others. He must balance connecting with the patient's emotional anguish to vanquish their fears while remaining objective and emotionally detached. It is the subjective emotional trigger that can potentially lead him into madness; he cannot fix every ill and he must accept that cruel hard fact.
Ideal
This Life Theme concerns the lucky individual who has everything one could ever want or need. He has a perfect life, a fabulous home, gobs of money, great looks, many admirers, and every available resource at his command. On the surface he appears to have it all and want for nothing, but often this Life Theme is decadent, vain, self-absorbed, callous, and pretentious. Left to his own means, the Ideal Theme may become addicted to mind-altering substances, take chances with his life as if he were indestructible, and inevitably become a real pain in the butt. On the other hand, the Ideal Life Theme may compulsively help his fellow man by donating to charity, adopting unwanted children, or financing humanitarian efforts.
Influencer
This Life Theme depicts a person who uses her wile, wit, and will to get exactly what she wants in life. If she is a good person who uses her beauty, intelligence, charm, or feminine sensuality to persuade others to either do her bidding or help her accomplish something good, she is not to be considered a wicked woman. If she is a dishonest, vindictive, jealous, or self-absorbed person she may very well turn this Life Theme on its ear and leave a trail of brokenhearted people in her wake. Spies, supermodels and housewives would be well suited for this theme, but socialites, go-go dancers, and political activists may not be prime Influencer material.
Integrity
The individual under this Life Theme is concerned, no, obsessed, with justice. He believes in fair treatment, equality, and candor. If there is an injustice lurking somewhere in the world, the Integrity Life Theme will sniff it out like a bloodhound flushes out quail. He is against bias, prejudice, and evil acts and deep down he knows his work will never be finished. Usually highly intelligent and extremely motivated, he is not overly concerned with making his justice wielding occupation a cash cow (but everyone has to earn a living) but rather with fairness and doing what is right for the human race. Now here is the kicker…when the methods of his madness come from a dark place in the soul, he can become a corrupt, Godless, and vindictive person who harms others on the basis of a skewed moral code.
Hermit
The individual who prefers to be alone is not necessarily a recluse, outcast, or eccentric weirdo. In fact, she may be a social butterfly who dazzles partygoers with witty diatribes and clever jokes. Many of her acquaintances and associates would be surprised to know she is a loner who can live alone for long periods at a time. The Hermit is not a person who needs her ego constantly stroked to know how fabulous she is. Inside, she feels safe and secure within her own skin. This creates a certain air of silent strength and self-reliance. She may even relish dining out at restaurants alone. Usually a deep thinker, she enjoys anything thought provoking and mysterious, because honestly, her personality and lifestyle are puzzling. Problems may arise when the Hermit Life Theme is coupled with one of the more outgoing themes. It may cause anxiety, fear, and trepidation, forcing her deeper into an isolated existence.
Hero
This individual is a fighter. He is the soldier who risks his life so that we may remain free and unharmed by those who dream of slaughtering us all. She is the teacher in the inner city who tirelessly works to give young people the gift of knowledge and logical thought. He is the firefighter who put his fears aside and bravely rushed to the aid of the victims of the September 11, 2001 Trade Center terrorist attack. She is the humanitarian aid worker who distributes food and water to tsunami victims all the while accepting the fact she may contract a deadly disease due to human decay, unsanitary conditions or contaminated water. He is the bystander who patiently talks a distraught teenager out of jumping off a ledge and committing suicide. He is the first man on the moon. She finds cures for epidemics. She is the woman who refuses give up her seat on the bus to a white man. This is a Life Theme that risks humiliation, bodily harm, and ridicule in order to help others.
Hostage of Fate
Used and sometimes abused, the Hostage of Fate serves as a pawn to the whims or schemes of others, whether they are for good or evil. Easily manipulated and humiliated, this Life Theme is used to carry out the deeds of other Life Themes. For instance, brainwashed followers of psychopaths like Jim Jones and David Koresh were Hostages of Fate. These souls were exploited and ultimately destroyed at the hands of sadistic, maniacal egomaniacs. Sadly, the Hostages of Fate who died while blindly following insane control freaks served a greater purpose. By understanding the dynamics of sociopaths, other innocent people may be saved from a similar fate.
Lenience
This Life Theme is concerned with becoming universally un-bias and tolerant of all people and ideas. He tries very hard to be politically correct, unassuming, broadminded, and accepting. Bigots, prejudices, and discrimination repel him. He feels put upon by having to tolerate fanatical opinions, moral standards, and political ideas. The problem is, in becoming tolerant of everyone he may become intolerant of those who oppose his views. In this respect he becomes hypocritical and unable to see another point of view. He may be able to tolerate cigarette smoke, but not the smoker. He may tolerate those who revile and disrespect religion, but not those who are in fact religious. He may tolerate the annihilation of morals in society and politics for the sake of private freedom, but not those who believe they have a right to religious freedom. He may vehemently push for society to tolerate vegetarians but be completely intolerable of meat eaters. He may tolerate a parent's chosen method of child rearing, but not the rambunctious child who runs amok in a public restaurant. He must fight becoming one-sided and find a middle ground from which to operate.
Liberator
The individual living under this Life Theme needs to rescue others. She offers a shoulder to cry on, financial help, and even a place to stay to those who she deems a victim. Any hard luck sob story will tug at her heartstrings and give her a reason to jump in and help. Sometimes she interferes in the private lives of others, gives unwanted advice to perfect strangers, or chides bad behavior as if she were admonishing a child. On the other hand, she is a loving, caring, and compassionate person who daydreams of rescuing the world from itself. Unfortunately, she might as well wear a bullseye reading "sucker" on her back. She is a beacon to people who are out to use her for all she's worth. They will drain her energy and bank account and leave her wondering how she allowed them to take advantage of her. This Life Theme must carefully choose who she wishes to help and hone her ability to read character. In addition, taken to an extreme, she may adopt radial political and social opinions in her attempt to save the human race. She must remember that everyone has free will and is permitted to make their own decisions concerning their lives. She cannot help everyone and must recognize that some people do not need or want her assistance. This misguided attitude will surely get her in deep trouble.
Melodramatic
Not to be confused with the Fretter theme, the Melodramatic Theme overreacts to every little inconsequential thing that happens to her. A broken nail, flat tire, bad meal, or overlooked dry cleaning bill is enough to give her a coronary. She will complain to anyone in earshot about how she has nothing but bad luck and everything sucks. She seems to blow everything out of proportion and simple disagreements and misunderstandings that could be easily and tactfully solved can quickly escalate into a screaming match. Anyone pointing out a flaw in her logic or mistake she has inadvertently made will immediately put her on the defensive. She has a tendency to complain more than listen. She may make excuses for her behavior instead of simply apologizing. A bad feature on the nightly news may convince her that the world is coming to an end. Her imagination may run away with her and cause her to become overly worried about an unfounded fear.
The Mystic
This theme concerns itself with the evolution of the soul and spiritual studies. Deep down in his soul he yearns to make a connection with God and elevate himself to the higher plane of consciousness. He may be a student, teacher, disciple, or leader of religious or spiritual pursuits and his main goal is not only improving and strengthening his own moral base, but helping others discover the beauty that resides in their own God-centered heart. This is a noble theme and he may indeed fortify the soul, but if he runs amok and falls off the path to true spirituality, there will be great consequences. He must guard against becoming self-righteous, condemnatory, egotistical, and holier-than-thou. To do so would tarnish his soul instead of refining it.
Obedience
Not to be confused with the Peacekeeper Theme, Obedience denotes a person who is overly sensitive to emotional outbursts or flamboyant displays of affection. She may be a pacifier or wall-flower and may have trouble voicing her opinions, standing up for her beliefs, or defending herself against loud, obnoxious people. She is calm, deliberate, and quiet and may have the power to talk someone down from the ledge, so to speak, but she has a seriously difficult time with confrontation in any form. Occasionally meek and always accommodating, the Obedience Life Theme is passive, and on an extreme, subservient.
Paucity
He may deprive himself of happiness, money, love, or food. This Life Theme may either deliberately deny himself material items or be born into poverty and misery. While many nuns and monks may be of this theme, many more live in poverty-stricken third world countries. However, he may simply be thrifty and careful not to overspend on extravagant items, or he could be a money-hoarding skinflint who forces his wife to drive a twenty-year-old rust bucket with bad brakes rather than buy her a new car. In this scenario, the Paucity Theme has made a conscious choice to deny his family any finery whatsoever. Perhaps he feels guilty for spending money or is frightened to let it go for fear of real poverty. On the other hand, the Paucity Theme may depict a pious individual who chooses a life of chastity and poverty to serve the Lord and minister to others. This theme is one of the most difficult to master.
Peacekeeper
In a world chocked full of turmoil and unrest, the Peacekeeper keeps humanity on an even keel. He needs serenity, accord, and steadiness to survive and does not live well with overly antagonistic, belligerent, or confrontational individuals. An accomplished mediator, this Life Theme is adept at calming frazzled nerves and settling arguments with grace and style. Aggressive behavior unnerves him, especially in the home or workplace, often driving him to solve disharmonious situations through free dialogue and good communication skills. He must learn to understand that in certain situations, peace and tranquility cannot be achieved and he must accept it, lest he go bonkers.
Prey
This highly evolved soul's mission is to become a victim. He could be a casualty of genocide, murdered, abused, unjustly accused of a heinous crime, or a slave. As horrifying and unfair as his hardship is, his sacrifice to humanity serves a major and valiant purpose. His heartbreaking misfortune serves to change laws or pass new, tougher legislation against crime; mete out justice for victims; and alter societal codes of conduct to protect all of humanity, not just one segment of the population. For instance, a person affected by the unsolved murder of a family member may grow up to become a forensic scientist who revolutionizes the science industry with new ways to track a killer. Had his relative not been murdered perhaps he would not have pursued that particular path, but in loving memory of his fallen kin, he decided to do everything in his power to find new scientific methods to solve crimes. Another example may be that of genocide. A young German-Jewish woman loses her family in the Holocaust then founds and organizes an international association that rescues people all over the world from genocidal maniacs hell-bent on carrying out "ethnic cleansing". Without the driving force of her grief, anger, and undying love, thousands of innocent people would have never been saved from death. The prey's death is never in vain. Sometimes grievous and heinous events must serve as a catalyst for the armies of good to step in and destroy evils that would otherwise go on unabated.
Prime Mover
No Broadway show can go on without the back stage crew. Except for the occasional scene change, the audience rarely sees them mill about, but know they are there regardless. This Life Theme concentrates on building foundations to which all other themes operate. He is not flamboyant and obvious, thus sometimes ignored, but without him society would surely fail.
Protector
This theme is indicative of an individual who chooses a career in law enforcement, forensics, public service, or the legal system. He is driven by a need to protect the defenseless, the innocent, and the upstanding. He is willing to put his life on the line to eradicate criminals from society. Regardless of the risks, this heroic person feels a need to police society to keep it from falling into anarchy and should be admired and esteemed. He will go toe to toe with the dregs of society, regardless of internal fears or threats of repercussions. However, if the Protector Life Theme is taken to extremes, it may cause corruption, abuse, injustice, and immorality. He who feels he is "above the law" or desires to serve as judge and jury destroys everything good and right in this Life Theme.
Provocateur
While many Life Themes would sit on the couch watching a reality television show while the room goes up in flames, the Provocateur Theme is the one to jump up, grab a fire extinguisher, and get everyone out of the house. He instigates movement and is often the first one to see a problem and decide something should be done…now. A mover and shaker, the Provocateur has the power incite passion in others. He is innovative and determined to complete the lofty goals he has set for himself. Problems arise when he becomes bored and unsure of himself.
Social Warrior
Unlike his Whistle Blower brethren, the Social Warrior is more cerebral and subtle. Standing on a street corner with a picket sign in the pouring rain while spewing irrational propaganda at the top of his lungs is not his idea of a good time. Being knee deep in throng of screaming protestors is not his place. He would rather use intellectual discourse to lead the rally to social change. He is a leader, not a follower. He pushes the envelope and forces society to listen to his ideas. He can be something of a mercenary when it comes to social issues, jumping from one cause to another on a whim. Stirring the political pot is his idea of a great time, but he sometimes inadvertently steps on the wrong toes in the process. He uses his wiles and instincts to persuade people his platform is one to change the world. Problems arise when he allows his ego to swell out of control.
Top Dog
This Life Theme concentrates on the individual who chooses to lead, not follow. He can be a political representative, CEO of a Fortune 500 company, or self-help guru. Sure, he makes decent money, has a bunch of butlers at his beck and call, and may have the perfect trophy wife, but a leader's life is not all it is cracked up to be. The old adage, "It is lonely at the top" is absolutely true, but someone has to do it. If a person can handle the stress, headaches, and long hours, more power to them. Unfortunately, many leaders are inundated by jealous underlings, branded "workaholics" and "control freaks," and are prone to be robbed, blackmailed, and assassinated. But, if his inner voice tells him it is his turn to step up to plate and take charge, he will understand that it is his destiny. And thank God he has the gumption and courage to do it.
Tormenter
The polar opposite of the Fretter, this Life Theme depicts a person who does very evil things within society to ensure humanity progresses into a heightened state of enlightenment. The Tormenter may be a real mean motor scooter and is often confused with a truly dark soul. He could be a murderer, sociopath, psychopath, or misanthrope who preys on the innocent. Often, he is a hardened criminal who shows no remorse for his despicable actions. He creates evil and is usually punished, and in the end his deplorable crimes force humanity to admit evil like his really exists. His very existence may force the legal system to reassess archaic laws, question the death penalty, or make new laws protecting children from predators. Whatever the reason for his life, he changes people's perception of good and evil. The person who charts this theme understands he will be hated, shunned and severely punished for his crimes but understands he will still wantonly and knowingly commit them in order to complete his soul's mission. It is important to remember that the Tormenter may look and act exactly like a dark soul. Avoid both types like the plague.
Underdog
This Life Theme does not use any of his God-given gifts or talents then blames everyone else for his shortcomings. It could be the fault of his parents (who would never let him be free to "find" himself), his siblings (who he thinks received so much more than he), his wife (who cheated on him with the milkman because she is not appreciative of all he has done for her), or his boss (who was scared to give him a promotion because he did not want the Underdog stealing his job). It is always something with the Underdog. He is melodramatic and reactionary and cannot seem to climb out of his self-imposed prison of failure. He enjoys acting like a martyr, when in fact he is not. What is the purpose of the Underdog you ask? Almost all of the other Life Themes need to play off of the Underdog, either because they need to learn tolerance or patience or they need to stop being a spineless sucker for the Underdog to pee on.
Villainy
This Life Theme is driven by a need to control individuals, groups, and situations. His well of power springs from a deep-seated need to dominate, destroy, or devastate other people. Psychologically, he is cruel, controlling, wicked and impervious and indifferent to the emotional pain of others. Without holding complete control over another, deep down he knows they would abandon him and his wickedly malevolent ways. He may physically and emotionally abuse his wife and kids; sexually intimidate, threaten, and terrorize an adolescent neighbor; or verbally and physically harass a coworker. Perhaps his soul's mission is to serve as a catalyst to those he abuses; by giving them a reason to stand up for themselves and leave a desperate and horrible situation behind, the abused may overcome an obstacle to their own mission in life.
Whistle Blower
There were many Whistle Blowers at both the DNC and RNC in 2004. With handwritten picket signs and plastic banners firmly in hand, the Whistle Blower wages his own war against whatever he deems wrong or unjust. He spends his life voicing his opinion to anyone who will listen. He tries to persuade society and the government that his ideas are pure gold. Sometimes he is disappointed that he is unable to change the world for the better (or what he believes is better) but he is rarely deterred from his mission. The Whistle Blower may be a professional blogger, outspoken activist, or propagandist, but he is always adamant and determined to change the world. Problems may arise if he uses deviant or illegal means to advance his cause.
Wanderer
Willing to try anything at least once, this Life Theme is determined to experience everything life has to offer. Outsiders may call him a jack-of-all-trades, reckless, or hedonistic, but he cannot stop flitting and flirting from one adventure to another. Spontaneous and full of zest, the Wanderer seeks new experiences like a junkie seeks a fix. On Monday he could be skydiving in California; on Tuesday he could be snorkeling in Fiji; on Wednesday he could be considering purchasing an oxygen bar in Boston; and on Thursday he could be attending a workshop on investing in the stock market. In social settings he will always have something to say about every topic, which makes him very interesting indeed. Problems arise when he becomes involved in highly dangerous activities. He can become addicted to this behavior, thus endangering his life and causing his loved ones to consistently worry about his well-being.
